Stamp of the Day

Two Gentlemen of Rochester (MN) and Much More

April 23 is another day without a first day cover so another day of being creative. Today is the 404th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare, who finally got a stamp of his own in 1964. I love the fact that in the “official” partially filled Scott stamp album that also was part of my dad’s collection (probably something he bought at some point) Will shares a page with stamps honoring what I think of as Two Gentleman of Rochester MN (the Doctors Mayo) and what I think of as Part 2 of The Taming of the Shrew (Homemakers).

April 23 also is the 385th anniversary of the founding of Boston Latin School, America’s oldest school and its first public school. Oddly, the postal service never honored that with a stamp so in its stead here is the 2 cent stamp issued in 1930 to honor the 300th anniversary of the founding of the Massachusetts Bay Colony (only 5 years before Boston Latin opened its doors). #stampoftheday
